For most small apartments the writing desk is the right format, and the DAOUTIME 36-inch is the cheapest honest version of it — 35.4 inches of open surface on a body only 15.9 inches deep, which keeps a walkway clear without pretending a laptop is a whole workstation. Buy a secretary desk instead when the room cannot show the work: the Winsome Regalia is 11.4 inches deep and closes over a half-finished job. If the room is tighter still, the Armocity fold-out is 7.9 inches deep shut.
Both formats exist for the same reason: a desk that has to live in a bedroom or a living room, not an office. They answer it in opposite directions. A writing desk is a shallow open surface that stays out. A secretary desk is a cabinet that becomes a surface when you open it. Everything else — price, storage, style — follows from that, including the one rule that eliminates the secretary format for a lot of people before they read any further.
The rule that decides it: can the front close over your screen?
A drop-front or fold-out desk only works if the surface can be cleared. That means no permanent external monitor, no dock left plugged in, no second screen on a stand. If you work on a laptop and close it at the end of the day, the format is excellent. If you run a monitor, the secretary desk is not a compromise — it is simply the wrong object, and no amount of liking the furniture changes it.
A writing desk has the opposite trait and the opposite weakness: it will take a screen, but at 15 to 16 inches deep it will not take a screen on its own foot. That is what an arm is for, and it is why shallow writing desks and clamp-on arms are so often bought together on this site.
The decision table
| Factor | Writing desk | Secretary desk |
|---|
| Floor depth | 15.75–23.5 in here | 7.9–11.4 in closed |
| Working surface | 35–43 in wide, all of it open | 20–25 in, and it has to be cleared |
| Permanent monitor | Yes, usually on an arm | No |
| Hides the work | No | Completely |
| Storage | Drawers, open shelves | Drawer plus an enclosed cabinet |
| Height | 29.5–30.5 in, standard desk height | 38.6–61 in — it is furniture, vertically |
| Weight / moving | 41 lb and up, flat-packs again | 63 lb and up, awkward |
What the depth numbers mean in a real room
The gap between 11.4 inches and 15.9 inches sounds small. In a bedroom with a 30-inch walkway it is the difference between a comfortable path and a sideways shuffle, because the chair has to come out past the desk either way. Our desk sizing guide publishes the depth bands and the clearance to allow behind a chair; the short version is that under about 16 inches of desk depth, the chair is the thing that sets your walkway, not the desk.
Vertically it goes the other way. A secretary desk is tall — 38.6 inches on the Winsome, 61 on the Armocity — because that is where the storage went when the footprint shrank. In a room with a low window sill or a sloped ceiling, measure the height before the depth.

Pros
- +15.9 in of depth keeps a walkway genuinely clear in a small room
- +35.4 in of open width — nearly half again the Winsome's working surface
- +Shelves mount left or right, so it fits either side of a room
- +Assembles in about half an hour, and one person can move it afterwards
Cons
- −Fabric drawers hold light items only
- −Laminate top rather than solid wood
- −Nothing closes — the work is on display when you walk past it
Skip this if…
…you want a monitor to stand on the desk. At 15.9 inches deep, a screen on its factory foot leaves almost no keyboard room — plan on a clamp arm, which this desk can take and a drop-front cannot.

- 9.6
- Hides the work
- 9.8
- Takes a monitor
- 1.5
- Value
- 7.4
Pros
- +11.4 in of floor depth — about three-quarters of what the shallowest writing desk here claims
- +The drop front closes completely over a half-finished job, which no flat desk can do
- +Drawer, cabinet and shelf inside a 25-inch-wide body
- +63 lb of solid construction: it does not walk across the floor when you type
Cons
- −The open working surface is the smallest here by a wide margin
- −63 lb and awkward to reposition once assembled
- −No cable route, so a permanent dock and screen look wrong on it
Skip this if…
…you run an external monitor. A drop-front desk cannot host a permanent screen because the front has to close over the surface — that single fact rules out the whole format for most two-screen setups.

- +Published interior drawer dimensions, which most desks in this class omit
- +Mid-century styling that does not read as office furniture in a living room
Cons
- −Costs several times the budget picks in this format
- −At 15.75 in deep, a monitor base crowds the keyboard
- −Two shallow drawers (2.2 in interior) are stationery storage, not file storage

Cons
- −20 in of width is the smallest working surface here
- −Fold-out tops must be cleared before they close, every time
- −61 in tall, so it is a visual object in a small room whether it is open or shut

- +Two drawers, both wide enough for stationery and cables
- +41 lb, so one person can reposition it with care
- +Turned spindle legs read as bedroom furniture rather than office kit
Cons
- −23.5 in deep — the deepest desk here, and depth is what eats a walkway

…you are shopping this category because you want the work hidden. Styling is not a lid — only the Winsome and the Armocity here actually close.
Pick the format from your evening, not your workday
The workday is nearly always better on a writing desk: more surface, a screen at the right distance, nothing to clear. The question is what the room has to do at seven in the evening. If the desk is in a bedroom you sleep in or a living room you host in, a visible pile of work is a real cost, and a lid is the only thing that removes it. Our bedroom office split guide and living room desk setup both work through that trade room by room.
Three questions that settle it in a minute
Do you use an external monitor?Yes → writing desk. This is not a preference; a drop front cannot close over a screen.
Is the desk in a room where work must be invisible?Yes, and you work on a laptop → secretary desk. The Winsome closes over paper and all; the Armocity closes to 7.9 inches.
Is your floor the scarce thing, or your surface? Floor → secretary or a folding desk. Surface → writing desk, and buy the widest one your wall run allows.
The five compared
| Desk | Format | Width × depth | Closes | Published load |
|---|
| DAOUTIME 36in | Writing | 35.4 × 15.9 in | No | Not published |
| Winsome Regalia | Secretary | 25.1 × 11.4 in | Yes, drop front | Not published |
| WOPITMER 39 × 16in | Writing | 39.4 × 15.75 in | No | Not published |
| Armocity fold-out | Fold-out cabinet | 20 in wide, 7.9 in closed | Yes | Not published |
| SEI HO8800 | Writing (secretary styling) | 42.75 × 23.5 in | No | 40 lb top / 15 lb per drawer |
Only one of the five publishes a load rating, which is normal in furniture-styled desks and worth knowing before you put a 30-pound all-in-one on a back edge. The SEI’s stated 40 lb top is modest; we are not going to estimate figures for the four that state nothing. If you plan to clamp anything to any of them, read how much weight a desk can hold first.
What about a computer desk instead?
That is the third format and often the right one: deeper, less decorative, built around a screen and a tower rather than around paper. If you got here because “writing desk” sounded like a style rather than a specification, read writing desk versus computer desk— it covers the depth and cable-management differences this page leaves out.
Otherwise, the two roundups behind this page rank each format in depth: small writing desks (five, 32 to 44 inches) and secretary desks(five compact designs, ranked on footprint and on how well they hide a workday). Prices on this page render from the live price layer with their own “as of” date.
How we picked
We do not run a testing lab
We compiled the published manufacturer specifications, did the footprint and clearance math ourselves, and read aggregated owner reviews, then scored each product against a published rubric. The scores are judgments from documented research — they are not measurements we took, because we do not have a lab and we are not going to pretend we do. Every spec traces back to a listing or manual named in Sources.
Questions
Frequently asked
What is the difference between a writing desk and a secretary desk?+
A writing desk is an open, shallow surface on legs — usually 15 to 23 inches deep — that stays out all the time. A secretary desk is a cabinet with a drop front or fold-out panel that becomes the surface when you open it, and closes over your work when you do not. The secretary claims much less floor (11.4 inches on the Winsome here) and much less usable surface.
Can you use a monitor on a secretary desk?+
Not permanently. The front has to close over the surface, so a screen on a stand or an arm stops the desk from doing the one thing it exists to do. If you run an external monitor, buy a shallow writing desk and put the screen on a clamp arm instead.
Are secretary desks practical for working from home?+
For laptop work in a room that has to look like a living space, yes — they are the only desk format that genuinely hides a workday. For a full workstation, no: 20 to 25 inches of width, no cable route and no monitor make them a few-hours desk rather than an eight-hour one.
Which is better for a small bedroom?+
A secretary desk if the room is shared or the work must be out of sight; a shallow writing desk if you want a usable surface and can live with seeing it. The deciding measurement is the walkway: under about 16 inches of desk depth, your chair sets the clearance rather than the desk.
Is a writing desk big enough to work on all day?+
Yes, with one caveat. The 35 to 43 inch widths here are plenty, but at 15 to 16 inches deep a monitor on its own foot leaves no keyboard room — so budget for a clamp arm, or buy a deeper desk. Our narrow desk roundup splits the picks by exactly that depth question.
Why are secretary desks so tall?+
Because the storage had to go somewhere when the footprint shrank. The Winsome is 38.6 inches tall and the Armocity fold-out is 61. In a room with a low sill or a sloping ceiling, check the height before the depth — this is the one desk format where height is the limiting dimension.
Finish the setup
Under $40: the parts that finish a small desk
A desk is the expensive decision. These are the cheap ones that decide whether it actually works in a small room — each is the top pick from one of our own roundups, and each clamps, sticks or stands rather than needing a drill. Prices live as of October 17, 2026.
Laptop stand
Rain Design mStand Laptop Stand
Lifts the screen to eye level and opens the space underneath for a keyboard, which is how a 40-inch desk fits a full setup.
