The five-minute teardown, in order

  1. Unplug one cable from the laptop (the hub takes everything else with it).
  2. Unclip the light; it needs no cable.
  3. Fold the stand flat — it stays with the laptop.
  4. Keyboard and mouse into the cart drawer or a shallow box.
  5. Wipe the table. The room is a dining room again.

The rule behind all of it: nothing is fixed to the table and nothing plugs into the wall except the cart. Every cable you add to a table setup adds thirty seconds to teardown, and thirty seconds is what stops it happening.

The table height problem this build does not solve

Dining tables are usually 29–30 inches high, which is close to standard desk height, but chairs are the issue: a dining chair sits you too low and has no adjustment, so your shoulders rise to reach the table. Protect the table

A laptop stand’s feet, a clip light’s jaw and a hub’s rubber base all sit on a surface that was bought as furniture. Felt pads on the stand, a cloth under the clip jaw and a small mat under the hub cost almost nothing and prevent the marks that turn a convertible office into an argument.

When to stop and buy a desk

If the table is covered five days a week, the pack-down is theatre and you should buy a real desk — a folding one, if the floor is tight, so it still disappears at weekends. Start at wall-mounted and folding desks or, if there is a corner to spare, the studio corner office build.

Where should I store the gear between shifts?
Somewhere that takes under thirty seconds to reach — a rolling cart parked against the wall, a deep drawer, or a shallow box on a shelf. The routine survives on convenience. A cart has the advantage of doubling as a standing surface; the alternatives are in under-desk storage.
Is it worth buying a dock for a temporary setup?
