About

What Desk & Dowel is for

Desk & Dowel is about one specific problem: fitting a real workspace into a space that was never meant to hold one — a small apartment, a dorm, a studio, the corner of a room that also has to be a bedroom.

Most desk and gear reviews are written for people with a spare office and a wide wall. This site is written for everyone else: the renter who cannot drill, the studio dweller measuring whether 40 inches will block the closet, the person who needs a monitor and a laptop on a desk narrower than either review site assumes. We organize everything around the number that actually decides the purchase — footprint — and we do the math so you do not have to guess.

Who writes this

Desk & Dowel is written by Stephen V., an enthusiast who is genuinely into getting a proper workspace into a small space. No lab, no test bench, no wall of products we claim to have used for months. What we do instead: read the manuals, compile the published specifications, compute the footprint and clearance, and cite the sources so you can check the math yourself. That is a thing one curious person can do honestly across a whole category — and it is more useful to a small-space buyer than a borrowed lab coat.

We are deliberate about what we do notclaim. We have not tested these products in a lab, and we will never write “in our testing” as though we did. The methodology pagelays out exactly how we pick, and what the scores are — and are not.

How this is funded

Desk & Dowelis funded by the Amazon Associates program. When you buy through one of our links we earn a small commission, at no extra cost to you. No brand pays us for placement, no manufacturer sends us products, and a commission rate has never changed a ranking — which is why you will find a $45 desk ranked above a $250 one on this site. The full details are on the affiliate disclosure page, and our editorial policy covers how picks are chosen and refused.

Who publishes it
