How to Mount a Monitor Without VESA Holes
Some panels have no mounting holes at all. Here is what an adapter bracket does, when it is a reasonable idea, and what to do when it is not.

You have measured the desk, decided a monitor arm is the answer, turned the screen around — and there are no holes. This is common on thin consumer panels, on all-in-one machines and on some televisions used as monitors, and it is the point at which most small-desk plans stall. There are three routes forward and one of them is honest about not working.
First, be sure. VESA holes are four threaded inserts in a square pattern on the back of the panel, usually 75 × 75mm or 100 × 100mm, and on many monitors they are hidden underneath the plastic stand cover. The cover often unclips or slides off after removing the stand. Check the manual before concluding they are absent — a large fraction of “my monitor has no VESA holes” turns out to be a cover. Route 1 — A VESA adapter bracket
An adapter bracket is a frame that grips the monitor without using screws into the panel: typically a horizontal bar that sits behind the screen with adjustable arms that hook over the top and bottom edges, or clamp the sides, presenting a standard VESA plate on its back. They are sold as “VESA adapter kits” or “non-VESA monitor mount adapters”.
They work, with conditions:
- Check the published screen size and weight range on the specific adapter. These vary widely, and an adapter that grips a 24-inch panel securely may not grip a 32.
- The bracket must contact the panel bezel, not the screen. Very thin bezels leave little for a hook to bear on, and pressure on the panel itself can cause visible discoloration.
- Assume it voids the monitor warranty. Manufacturers do not sanction clamping the display, and if the panel is damaged in a fall the claim will be unsuccessful.

Our honest position: on a light panel, on a well-specified bracket, above a desk rather than above a walkway, this is a reasonable thing to do. On a heavy screen, over a bed, or in a house with children, it is not, and the alternatives below are better.
Route 2 — Keep the stand and change the desk instead
The reason people want an arm on a small desk is usually the depth the stand base occupies, not the arm itself. If mounting is off the table, attack the same problem differently:

The clamp-on shelf is the underrated one. A shelf that clamps to the rear desk edge and overhangs behind it gives the stand somewhere to live that is not your desktop, and it costs a fraction of an arm plus adapter.
Route 3 — Replace the monitor
Not the answer anyone wants, but worth the arithmetic. An adapter bracket plus a monitor arm is a real sum of money, and a VESA-compatible 24-inch panel is not expensive. If your current screen is old, low-refresh or has a stand you already dislike, buying one with the holes is often the cheaper route to the setup you actually want, and it removes the warranty question entirely. Laptops, all-in-ones and televisions
Laptopsnever have VESA holes, and the correct product is a laptop tray that mounts to an arm — a shelf the machine sits on, not a clamp on the machine. See monitor arms with a laptop tray. All-in-one computers often do have VESA holes under a cover, and it is always worth checking, because an adapter bracket on an all-in-one is carrying a computer rather than a screen. Televisionsused as monitors almost always have VESA holes, though frequently in larger patterns (200 × 200mm and up) that need a different arm — check the pattern before assuming an arm will fit.
Before you buy anything, check three numbers
- The pattern. If holes exist, measure center to center horizontally and vertically. 75 × 75 and 100 × 100mm are what standard desk arms take.
- The weight.The panel's weight excluding the stand, from the manufacturer's specification page, plus the adapter if you use one.
- The desk. Whether the arm can clamp at all — thickness and material limits rule out glass and thin hollow tops, which is a separate reason the plan may not work.
If all three check out and the panel genuinely has no holes, an adapter is a defensible choice on a light screen. If any of the three is marginal, the clamp-on shelf is the fix that carries no risk at all.
