Desk Lamp Color Temperature: Which Kelvin Number to Pick
2700K, 4000K or 6500K? A short guide to the three numbers on a lamp box — Kelvin, lumens and CRI — and which one to buy for which task.

Lamp listings quote three numbers and most people only look at one. Kelvin (K) is the colour of the light, from warm orange to cold blue-white. Lumens is how much light there is. CRI is how accurately colours appear under it. You need to read all three, and for a small room the interaction between them matters more than any single figure.
The Kelvin scale in plain terms

If you buy one fixed temperature, 4000K is the choice that annoys you least. But the better answer for a small room is a lamp that adjusts, because a desk in a bedroom or studio has to do two jobs: focused work in the afternoon and quiet light at night. Brightness: how many lumens do you need?
For a single-person desk, a lamp in the 400–800 lumenrange is normally plenty when it is close to the work — the Lepro lamps we rank publish 700 and 750 lumens respectively. Two things matter more than the raw number. Distance: light falls off fast, so a 500-lumen lamp 12 inches from your notebook beats a 900-lumen one three feet away. Spread: a wide diffused head lights a whole desk evenly, while a small bright head makes a hotspot and leaves the rest dim, which is tiring to work under.
CRI: the number almost nobody checks
CRI(Colour Rendering Index) describes how faithfully colours appear, on a scale to 100. Anything above 80 is fine for text; above 90 matters if you do design work, art, makeup or anything where colour accuracy has consequences. It is one of the few genuine quality differentiators between a cheap lamp and a good one — the Honeywell HWT-H2 in our dorm lamp picks publishes CRI94, and most budget lamps publish nothing at all.
Screens change the calculation
The specific discomfort of desk work is contrast: a bright screen in a dim room makes your eyes work hard, and no amount of Kelvin-tuning fixes it if the area around the screen stays dark. The goal is for the wall and desk behind and around the monitor to be lit to something near the screen’s own brightness. Evening work in a room you also sleep in
If your desk is in a bedroom or a studio, the useful specification is the lamp’s lowestsetting: how warm and how dim it will go. A lamp that reaches 2700K at 5–10% brightness lets you work late without switching the room on, which is both easier on your eyes and better for whoever else is trying to sleep. Cool bright light late in the evening is the one lighting choice with a genuine physiological downside, so buy the dimming range as carefully as the maximum output.
Where you put the lamp matters as much as which lamp
Two positioning rules do more for comfort than any Kelvin choice. Light from the side, not from behind you. A lamp behind your head throws your own shadow onto the desk and reflects off the screen; a lamp to the side of your working area, angled across it, does neither. If you are right-handed, put it on the left so your writing hand does not cast a shadow over what you are writing. Keep the light source out of your field of view.Glare is not about brightness — it is about seeing the emitter directly, so a lamp head aimed at the desk and shielded from your eye line is comfortable at a brightness that would be unbearable if the LEDs were visible. This is why architect-style lamps with long heads and deep shades feel calmer than bare-bulb designs at the same lumen figure.
On a small desk there is a third consideration: the lamp competes for the surface. A base lamp positioned correctly to the side is often positioned exactly where your notebook wants to be, which is why our small-desk picks lean towards clamp lampsand light bars — they can be placed by optics rather than by whatever gap is left. Whichever format you buy, aim the head so the brightest part of the beam lands on your work rather than on the screen, and check the reflection: if you can see the lamp in the monitor, move it until you cannot.

One: prefer a tunable lamp over a fixed one, and check the range covers 2700K to about 5000K. Two: check it dims to 10% or lower if the desk shares a room with a bed. Three: prefer a wide diffused head to a bright spot. Four: if colour accuracy matters, look for a published CRI above 90.
