Questions

Frequently asked

What is a good desk size for a small apartment?
For one person, about 40 inches wide by 20 inches deep is the sweet spot — enough for a laptop and a single monitor with room to write. Below 34 inches you are choosing between a laptop and an external monitor. The desk-size guide has the full width and depth bands in a table.
How deep does a desk need to be for a monitor?
A monitor on a stand needs about 24 inches of desk depth so the base and your keyboard both fit. If your desk is shallower, mount the monitor on a clamp arm instead — that frees the whole surface and needs only 16 inches of depth.
Can you put a monitor arm on any desk?
Almost. Two things decide it: the desk-edge thickness (most C-clamps fit 0.4–3.4 inches) and the monitor’s VESA pattern (usually 75×75mm or 100×100mm). Measure both first. The monitor arms roundup lists the clamp range for each pick.
Can you mount a monitor arm without drilling?
Yes. A C-clamp arm grabs the desk edge with zero holes and zero damage — the renter’s default. Grommet mounts are sturdier but need a hole in the desk. See the no-drill monitor arms picks.
How much desk space does a monitor arm actually save?
A monitor stand takes up roughly an 8-to-10-inch-deep footprint at the back of the desk. A clamp arm reclaims all of it — on a 40-inch desk, that is the difference between having a keyboard tray and not.
What is the best desk lighting for a small desk?
Light that does not sit on the surface: a monitor light bar (rests on the screen, zero desk footprint) or a clamp lamp (clamps the edge, no base). A traditional base lamp eats a 6-to-8-inch disc of desk you cannot spare.
Do wall-mounted desks have to be screwed into studs?
Yes. Drywall anchors alone cannot take the leverage a fold-down desk puts on the wall, especially with a monitor on it. If you cannot drill, use a folding floor desk instead — see wall-mounted & folding desks.
What is the smallest desk that still works for a computer?
Around 31.5 inches wide. At that width you run either a laptop or a single external monitor, not both side by side. For two screens you need more width, or a monitor arm to stack the space vertically.
Are cheap small desks sturdy enough?
For a laptop and a monitor, yes. Sturdiness problems show up as side-to-side wobble when you type, and a steel frame with adjustable feet is what prevents it. Particleboard-frame desks are lighter-duty — keep heavy loads off them.
Corner desk or L-shaped desk — what is the difference?
They are the same shape. “Corner” describes where it goes; “L-shaped” describes the top. The real choice is a corner-style desk versus a plain rectangle — the comparison settles it.
What is the smallest standing desk you can buy?
Compact electric standing desks start around 40 inches wide. Below that, look at a standing-desk converter that sits on an existing desk. See the small standing desks roundup.
How do I set up a desk if I rent and cannot drill?
Clamp everything: clamp-mount monitor arms, clamp lamps, freestanding or folding furniture, and reversible adhesive cable routing. Nothing leaves a hole. The renter-friendly setup guide walks it end to end.
Do your prices update, or are they stale like other review sites?
They update. Every price is pulled live from the Amazon Product API and stamped with the date. If our data is more than 48 hours old, the number disappears and the button reads 'Check price on Amazon' — we never show a stale figure.
Do you test the products yourselves?
No, and we say so. We do not run a testing lab. We compile the published specifications, do the footprint and clearance math, and read aggregated owner reviews — then score against a published rubric. It is reproducible, which a lab claim you cannot verify is not.
How do you make money?
Through the Amazon Associates program: we earn a small commission when you buy through our links, at no extra cost to you. It never changes our rankings. Full details on the affiliate disclosure page.
How do I keep a small desk from feeling cramped?
Get everything off the surface: a monitor arm frees the depth a stand would eat, a clamp lamp frees the corner a base lamp would take, and under-desk storage moves the clutter below. A clear surface reads as a bigger desk.
